The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), as coordinator of the DESAL+ LIVING LAB Platform, supports the International Conference on desalination organized by the European Desalination Society (EDS), to be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from May 16th to 19th, 2021.
This event takes place every two years and they manage to gather hundreds of researchers, policy makers, managers, engineers and plant operators, consultants, industrial sector, university teachers, etc. in all its editions.
This year the conference “Desalination for the Environment: Clean Water and Energy Conference”, will be devoted to advances towards providing fresh water for all, at affordable cost and at economical energy requirements. Furthermore, an overview of the most recent developments in desalination technology, its cost and extent of application, including socio-economic and environmental issues will be given.

During the event, the members of the DESAL + LIVING LAB platform will have the opportunity to share their latest advances and results in their ongoing projects.
In addition, a DESAL+ LIVING LAB Workshop (promoted by the E5DES project, co-funded by the ERDF – 2014-2020 MAC PROGRAMME) will be held on May 16th, 2021 from 16:00 to 18:00 in parallel with EDS Conference registration time, in a room designated by the organization at the Palacio de Congresos de Canarias.
The Workshop will be focused on the potentialities and challenges of Artificial Intelligent (AI) in the Desalination Industry, and will be limited to approximately 20 pre-registered participants interested in finding out more about the current and general state-of-the-art of AI applied to desalination. A warm welcome is given to all those who would like to debate and share their ideas regarding the potential applications and challenges of AI in the field of desalination.
For further information, please contact the Workshop Chair and Research Professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Dr. Pedro J. Cabrera, at pedro.cabrerasantana@ulpgc.es.
After the end of the congress, on May 19th in the morning, a technical visit will be organized for a maximum of 50 participants in the Congress who wish to attend. During the visit participants will have the opportunity to see the ITC test facilities in Pozo Izquierdo as well as the Maspalomas II desalination plant.
DESAL+ LIVING LAB is a R&D&i Platform, created within the DESAL+ project, co-financed by the Interreg MAC 2014-2020 Cooperation Program, in which organizations from the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde and Mauritania participate. This group of entities bring together the scientific knowledge and R&D infrastructure specialized in desalination of the Macaronesia region, in collaboration with companies and start-ups.
