DESAL+ LIVING LAB has been officially running since 2017 and there are several number of R&D&I projects and services done or in progress.
Area for strengthening the governance and hydraulic and energy efficiency of water transport and treatment technologies (November 2021 – June 2023). Co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the terms set out in the Canary Islands operational programme 2014-2020, with a co-financing rate of 85%. Action under Priority Axis 1: Boosting research, technological development and innovation. Specific Objective: 010a2 OE.1.1.2: Strengthening R&D institutions and creating, consolidating and improving infrastructure. Line of Action: IC.1.1.2.001: Public R&D equipment and infrastructure (ACIISI).
Experimental platform for seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination with high energy efficiency (July 2021 – June 2023). Financed by REACT-EU, within the framework of the European Recovery Instrument “Next Generation” (Exp. Sd-2111). The main objective of this project is to validate the design of a pilot seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant (made in the Canary Islands) for its development on an industrial scale (5,000 m3/day) with the lowest possible specific energy consumption and meeting the requirement of a maximum of 1 mg/l of Boron in the permeate.
This initiative aims to attract and provide knowledge applicable to desalination processes with remarkable international outreach on the desalination two identified challenges: #1: Valorization of desalination brine and #2: Emerging technologies on seawater desalination. Research and innovation towards the Excellence in Technological Efficiency, use of Renewable Energies, Emerging Technologies and Circular Economy in Desalination (October 2019 – October 2023). Co-financed by The E5DES project will allow to increase and strengthen the R&D+i of international excellence, in a coordinated manner from the DESAL+ LIVING LAB Platform, in the search for projects and solutions in desalination. To this end, continuous improvement actions of technological and scientific capacities and external visibility will be carried out, supporting entrepreneurial ideas (startups) and providing innovative solutions in the strategic and priority research lines identified for the Macaronesian area.
