The signing of the contract between Brineworks and the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) marks a significant milestone in the collaboration between emerging companies and established entities in the field of technological innovation in desalination and circular economy.
This agreement establishes the terms for Brineworks to install a pilot plant within the ITC premises and benefit from the services provided by the Brine Valorisation Open Testbed funded by the Cabildo of Gran Canaria – SPEGC, with the aim of conducting decisive tests for the development of its brine valorisation technology, which not only generates high-value by-products but also enables ocean-based CO2 removal.
This strategic step, an international milestone in R&D, not only facilitates the development and validation of Brineworks’ innovative solution but also represents an inspiring example of synergies between public research centres and industry to address global challenges, in this case, the circular management of desalination brines.
Brineworks is building the future of affordable, scalable and responsible ocean-based CO2 removal through innovation in the field of saline water electrolysis. The company’s novel technology will furthermore have significant implications for brine valorisation processes and will be tested and showcased at ITC.
The alliance is part of the objectives set following the recent establishment of the brine valorisation strategy within the DESAL+ LIVING LAB platform, an initiative led by ITC, and it represents the first contract signing with an external company through this initiative with brine exploitation. At this time, ITC is actively engaged in negotiations with other companies to expand this type of cooperation within the same industry sector.
