DESAL+ LIVING LAB platform will be present at the EUROMED 2024 International Conference on Desalination for clean water and energy.
The European Desalination Society (EDS), in partnership with the Egyptian Desalination Research Center for Excellence, has organised the event, taking place from May 6th to 9th in Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt). The conference serves as a global scientific platform where specialists from International and Egyptian Universities, Research Institutions, and Industry discuss the most recent methods for sourcing alternative water sources and energy to maintain sustainable development in line with the 2030 Egyptian plan.
Ángel Rivero Falcón, an ITC researcher working within the Water Department, will deliver a presentation on the groundbreaking results of the research conducted in NF (Nanofiltration) and OARO (Osmosis Assisted by Osmotic Recovery) pilot plants, in the context of valorising brines from seawater desalination plants.
This work focuses on the combination of both technologies as part of a whole brine valorisation scheme. Nanofiltration technology acting as a brine pre-treatment, where the separation of monovalent and multivalent ions occurs, and the OARO technology acting as a brine concentration system where the NF monovalent-rich stream output gets concentrated up to 230 g/L. The advancements to be presented can change the way brines are handled in desalination plants, offering innovative solutions that not only reduce environmental impact but also generate opportunities for reuse and valorisation of these byproducts.
ITC’s participation in this international congress underscores the DESAL+ LIVING LAB platform’s commitment to cutting-edge research in the field of brine valorisation and confirms its position as a leader in promoting innovative solutions for global desalination challenges.
This initiative is part of the scope of project Sol2H2O – European Twinning for research in Solar energy to (2) water (H2O) production and treatment technologies, funded by the European Commission through Horizon Europe GA Nr. 101079305.
