The University of La Laguna (ULL) is dedicated to the creation and development of knowledge through its research, as well as to inspiring technological progress aimed at improving the conditions and quality of life in the social environment. In this regard, the DESAL+ Living Lab Platform—established through the collaboration of various organizations and academic institutions—has enabled the fulfillment of these objectives.
In particular, the platform has addressed the water issue and the water-energy nexus, a fundamental challenge that not only affects the Canary Islands—where its vital importance is unquestionable—but also represents a global challenge with a direct impact on various communities. At the University of La Laguna, together with all the members of the Platform and through a broad group of researchers, efforts have been made to tackle a variety of issues related to these fields. Notably, contributions include enhancing water quality in relation to the agricultural sector, studying techniques for improved maintenance of desalination plants, and exploring new methods of supplying energy to these plants—specifically through various works on the feasibility and application of marine energy.
In an effort to ensure that its contribution to society has the greatest possible impact, this research has been conducted in direct collaboration with companies in the sector, along with a significant effort to disseminate the findings through numerous studies published in internationally renowned scientific journals. Naturally, these achievements would not have been possible without the collaboration of the institution's researchers, the support of the University, and the ongoing cooperation that has been consistently maintained in recent years within the DESAL+ Living Lab Platform.
