On 11 August, the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC), through the IDIWATER project, and the Latin American Association for Desalination and Water Reuse (ALADYR) held the webinar “High-Energy-Efficiency or Renewable Energy-Powered Desalination and Water Reuse Models in Isolated or Arid Ecosystems”, which brought together a total of 143 participants.
The event provided an opportunity to share experiences and innovative solutions aimed at improving the energy efficiency of desalination and water reuse processes, particularly in isolated, island, or arid territories. The programme covered a range of technological experiences and models, from highly energy-efficient seawater desalination to the treatment of alternative water sources using low-energy membrane systems, as well as the use of renewable energy for water intended for agricultural irrigation.
During the webinar, moderated by the ITC, a number of highly relevant experiences, practical cases, and insights were presented and shared. ELMASA presented its experience in highly efficient seawater desalination for isolated areas and the DESALRO 2.0® technology. AQUALIA addressed the treatment of alternative water sources using low-energy membrane systems. SOSLAIRES shared more than two decades of experience using wind energy to produce desalinated water for agriculture in the Canary Islands. Finally, BALTEN presented its ongoing project aimed at achieving carbon footprint neutrality in water reuse for agriculture in Tenerife.
Following the presentations, participants had the opportunity to ask questions. The discussion highlighted the strong interest in the topics addressed and contributed to enriching the debate, providing a broader perspective on the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainable water management in isolated and arid ecosystems.
This event represents a further step in the collaboration between ITC and ALADYR, with plans to continue jointly developing online events and training activities, creating new spaces to share knowledge, experiences, and technological solutions related to desalination, water reuse, and sustainable water management.
