Innovation-driven solutions for improving the technology and processes of the industrial water cycle.
IDIWATER, between October 2024 and September 2028, aims to maximize this potential to achieve joint R&D results with the most representative companies in the comprehensive water cycle within the cooperation space (innovation-driven), and to offer small businesses advanced and intelligent solutions adapted to our region, as well as to promote the transfer of highly innovative products, R&D contracts, and enhance training with employability criteria for technicians and researchers in the cooperation space.
The Macaronesia is a strategically ideal geographical environment for conducting applied research in cooperation in the water sector, due to its specific conditions, the experience of local companies, and the existing human capital and research infrastructure.
IDIWATER aims to invest in smart specialization and continuous innovation in the industrial water sector, particularly in desalination and its connection with agriculture and energy (green/blue economy), as a driver to generate high-quality employment and improve well-being, as well as to support the growth and consolidation of strategic sectors in the cooperation area, such as agriculture and tourism.
This project capitalizes the existing public research infrastructure and resources on the DESAL+ LIVING LAB platform, which is made available to companies to address sector demands and challenges, through the shared use of these resources to tackle common water issues in our cooperation space.
Conduct applied research with companies in the industrial water sector of the cooperation space to generate smart solutions, market products, and knowledge exchange in smart water, digitalization, pre-treatments, desalinated water for agriculture, water circularity, carbon footprint reduction, and brine valorization.
Activities:
2.1.1 – Smart and digitalization strategies for energy management, decarbonization, and increasing efficiency in the water sector.
2.1.2 – Solutions and products aimed at producing desalinated water for agriculture with higher quality, efficiency, and lower cost.
2.1.3 – New products and developments in desalination pre-treatments, circularity, resource reduction, and impact mitigation in the water sector.
Establish competitive open access mechanisms for water industry companies, utilizing the shared use of existing public R&D infrastructure and resources on the DESAL+ LIVING LAB platform, to promote collaboration and accelerate smart solutions and market products of interest for the cooperation space (desalination, water regeneration, digitalization, network losses, decarbonization, and valorization of wastewater treatment by-products).
Activities:
2.2.1 – Protocols and open access calls for companies to public research infrastructure on topics of interest within the water sector.
2.2.2 – Implementation of applied research agreements and development of solutions in cooperation with companies.
2.2.3 – Support for the creation of new technology-based companies with an interest in the water industry within the cooperation space.
Increase specialized training and capitalization of R&D generated in the industrial water sector within the cooperation space, enhance the transfer of products, and attract investment for research through the signing of results exploitation agreements.
Activities:
2.3.1 – High-level training, knowledge exchange, and promotion of entrepreneurship for technicians and researchers in the water sector.
2.3.2 – Creation of public-private consortia with projects in the water sector that capitalize on research results by transferring them to the market.
